Most of us believe that the toilet is the dirtiest object in the house, but evidence suggests it is actually the kitchen sink! Why? 1. The kitchen sink – with millions of bacteria in the drains!
Remember, everything gets tossed into the sink, which is also a wet environment and ideal for bacterial growth. Spray it every night with disinfectant and allow it to sit. You can also refresh it with a bleach and water soak for a couple of minutes.
2. Cleaning cloths and sponges
The irony! The things you use to clean your kitchen and bathroom are likely to be very germ-ridden. Make sure you throw them into the dishwasher every couple of days – or immediately after a cloth or sponge touches raw food. You can also kill bacteria by putting a sponge in the microwave for two minutes.
3. Chopping boards
Again, because you prep raw meat on chopping or cutting boards, they tend to become hothouses of germs, especially where the knife makes tiny nicks in the surface that are difficult to clean. Use one board for meat and fish and another for vegetables and dry produce. Make sure you wash them carefully after each use – wooden blocks by hand and plastic and glass in the dishwasher. Applying a coat of mineral oil periodically also helps to seal cuts and cracks.
